Home - Energy Audits for Existing Homes

What We Do:

A home energy audit is an in-depth analysis of a home's energy efficiency. We will analyze how energy is being used and where energy loss is occuring. State of the art equipment will be used to detect insulation deficiencies, moisture problems and detect air leaks in the building envelope. Once the audit is completed, you will receive a detailed report of the results. The report will highlight any problems and include recommendations on actions needed to improve energy efficiency.

How It's Done:

1. Initial Interview: Information is collected about the house. The home owners should discuss any existing energy or ventilation problems, and any goals or plans for the house (i.e., Planned extensions, renovations, etc.)

2. Outdoor Inspection: Doors, windows, skylights, overhangs, building orientation and landscaping will be evaluated for impacts on energy consumption.

3. Indoor Inspection: Ceilings, walls, windows, exterior doors, attic spaces, crawl spaces, concealed spaces and appliances will be evaluated for impacts on energy consumption.

4. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Equipment: The HVAC system, it's location and distribution system will be evaluated.

5. Blower Door Test: The air-tightness of the house will be analyzed using diagnostic equipment and a fan and fabric shield set into one of your exterior doors. The house will be depressurized and the rate that air re-enters the house through unsealed cracks and other openings will be checked.

6. Infrared Thermal Image Scan: An Infrared camera will be used to locate hot and  cold spots in the building envelope, to help understand what is going on behind the walls. The scan can locate areas where insulation and/or air sealing needs to be improved and will also identify potential moisture problems.

7. Report of Findings: The auditor will discuss preliminary findings with you and give you a general idea of what improvements can be made to your home. A report will be mailed to you within one week with specific findings and recommendations.
